A Brief History of Gwelup, Perth
The name Gwelup is derived from a Noongar Aboriginal word meaning “to shift position” or “to move”, likely referring to the seasonal movement of water in the wetlands and Lake Gwelup itself. For thousands of years, the Noongar people lived on and cared for this land, using the wetlands as an important source of food, water, and natural materials.
European settlement in the Gwelup area began in the late 19th century, with fertile soils and access to fresh water from Lake Gwelup making it ideal for agriculture. Market gardens, orchards, and dairy farms dominated the landscape, and for many decades, produce grown in Gwelup helped feed Perth’s growing population.
The suburb began to transform in the 1960s and 1970s, as farmland gave way to residential development. Despite this growth, Lake Gwelup Reserve and surrounding bushland were preserved, providing a unique balance of nature and suburbia. Today, Lake Gwelup is a popular recreational area, known for its walking and cycling trails, birdwatching, and picnic spots, and it remains a reminder of the area’s agricultural and environmental history.
Modern Gwelup is a peaceful, family-friendly suburb just 12 kilometres from Perth’s CBD and minutes from the coast. It is well-connected by road and public transport and offers a mix of established homes and new developments. With nearby schools, parks, shops, and community facilities, Gwelup has become a sought-after area for families, professionals, and retirees alike.
